Sumatra

In 1862, the development of Medan, a province on the island of Sumatra, began. The sultans of Deli, Langkat, Serdang, and Asahan granted permission for the development of their land. The volcanic soil was very fertile. The Dutchman Jacob Nienhuys settled there because of its agricultural potential. After he succeeded in growing tobacco in the area, many European companies followed suit, establishing themselves in the area around Medan. J.T. Cremer, the future founder of the NDSM shipyard, united the planters in 1869 into the Deli Company and represented their interests with the Dutch state. The Deli Company became one of the most successful and profitable colony based companies.
