Noorder IJ polder
Amsterdam was connected to the Zuiderzee by the IJ river. This made the city vulnerable to floods and storms. In the mid-nineteenth century, the decision was made to reclaim large parts of the IJ.
Canal dikes were constructed for the IJpolders along a seventeen-kilometer stretch. Both sides of the canal were then drained. The soil consisted largely of fertile clay. After the construction of roads and ditches, the agricultural land was sold at auction between 1873 and 1879. The proceeds benefited the Amsterdam Canal Company, which had made the investments in the construction.
When the NDSM shipyard at Oostenburg became too small, the Noorder IJ polder became the new location for the shipyard in 1916.
