Last Hope

The occupation of the NSM shipyard (NDSM had merged with shipbuilder Verolme, RSV, in 1979) in 1981 was a protest against the impending closure of the shipyard and its consequences for employment, particularly in shipbuilding and maintenance in the shipping industry. The NSM occupation was a workers' protest against the severe economic crisis that hit the shipbuilding industry hard.
The NSM was on the verge of closure, with serious consequences for thousands of employees.
At the end of 1981, with peaks in November and December, the shipyard was occupied by workers and sympathizers.
The occupiers staged actions to draw attention to their situation, including blockading the site and holding demonstrations in the city. The goal was to save jobs and prevent the shipyard's permanent closure.

The government agreed to a restart, but in 1984 the NSM closed permanently. Competition with low-wage countries with strong technical expertise has proven fatal. It now appears that the large government subsidies to RSV Verolme, and indirectly to NDSM, were the source of widespread fraud.
